Layar B.V. offers a mobile augmented reality (AR) browser called Layar. The browser is offered on the Android Marketplace (Google) and on the iPhone App store (Apple). Third party developers can create AR-applications using Layar’s software tools and platform and publish these applications (called “layars” on the Layar browser. End users can access all layars via the AR browser. AR exploits the GPS, compass, and camera of the smartphones, and augments what can be viewed in the camera. AR offers value by adding context such as location, time, view direction etc. AR categories include information, entertainment, and e-commerce.
Sunstone first invested in Layar in the company’s seed round in 2009. In June 2014, Layar was acquired by London/NYC based Blippar.
